7 Ways YOU can Overcome the Fear of Change!

As a Coach, I see a myriad of examples where the person understands the context for change, knows the benefits of making the change, is aware of the consequences of not making the change, but still does not start the journey due to a fear of change.

Fear is a natural and common response to any change and can happen in many scenarios, are often seen in the realms of career, habits, health, relationships, personality, and independence. The common fears I have come across from real client cases are the fears of uncertainty, failure, self-doubt. and external judgment.

Suzy Kassem was spot on when she said “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” The truth is that we will miss 100% of all the shots we don’t take. We cannot succeed unless we try. Changes happen due to the actions we take. It is impossible to eradicate fear. However, taking simple proactive steps can help diminish its impact and help you steer forward towards better outcomes. The best thing you can do for yourself is to learn the best ways to adapt to change.

Here are 7 ways to overcome your fear of change:

  1. Staying positive is key: Your best intentions to make changes, can easily get sidetracked due to negative thoughts and emotions. It is natural, but you have to find ways to find motivation and stay positive. Only you can do that for you.
  2. Accept your situation: The first step to embrace change and to start the journey of change is to accept the situation. Accepting is not the same as giving in to the situation. Finding ways to compromise with negative things will not change your reality. Becoming aware, and resolving to take steps to make changes is very powerful
  3. Be determined: If you want to get over your fear of change, you have to really be resolute and determined to change. If you do, you’ll do whatever it takes to get motivated. You can do this by reciting affirmations, writing directions down for yourself, or asking a trusted friend or family member for help.
  4. Don’t wait for the perfect time: Remember that it’s always the right time to change. Don’t make excuses for yourself. Procrastinating change as you want to wait for a perfect time to change is a recipe for failure. Believe that you can do it and go for it!
  5. Take inspiration from Life Lessons: Life is the greatest teacher. Power your change journey by taking lessons from your own life. What led you to success in the past? What led you to some failures? What important life lessons have you learned? Apply what you have learned. You will be glad you did!
  6. Big changes start with smaller changes: Change is overwhelming, and big changes can be scary. The fact is a big change in your life can be achieved through a series of mini changes. Small incremental steps take the stress out and help you navigate the changes better, without feeling shocked and scared.
  7. Celebrate even small successes: Our minds are programmed to often look at what is not working, and sometimes does not allow us to recognize progress, small wins, and small successes. Make the effort to look for positive changes and take time to celebrate! It builds energy and motivates you to do even better!

George Bernard Shaw stated eloquently stated, “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.” Making changes to your perspective, beliefs, thoughts, attitude, outlook, and taking actions can help you achieve the change you desire.

Yes, it is easier said than done. But it can be done. Are you ready to set goals, commit to them, and move forward? I encourage you to take the first step today! If you feel you are stuck and can benefit from 1:1 coaching, let’s talk!
